Chances are that your hard drives are formatted as just one huge partition.
The main benefit to dividing this large partition into several small partitions is to minimize damage when you run into a situation demanding reinstallation of your OS. This is normally accomplished by sorting out your OS as well as applications from the media, and by putting both of them on separate partitions. Although, you get a lot of 3rd party applications that you can either purchase or download, it’s wise enough to use the application that comes in built- the disk management system.
- Open up the Start menu and key “disk management” in the search window. Next, just click on ‘Create and format hard-disk partitions’. This is where you would have to create empty space on the drive.
- Latest versions of Windows have the ability to split off unused areas of hard drive to form new partitions though. Anyway, to be able to do it, choose the right drive from the bottom pane of the window.
- Latest versions of Windows OS are designed to create newer partitions by splitting up unused areas of your hard disk drive, unlike the older versions especially Windows XP. Start splitting up by selecting the hard drive from the list that appears in the bottom pane of that window.
- Now, Right click on the main partition, choose Shrink Volume. The program automatically calculates the amount of space it can shave off, depending on the capacity of hard drive.
- Enter the size of the new partition in the popping window that you would like to split off from the main partition. Note: the size is in MB, and 1024 MB make up 1 GB. Once you have chosen the desired, click the Shrink button.
- Now a partition labeled unallocated would show up in the bottom pane of the screen. Right click on that and choose New Simple Volume from the popping menu.
- The wizard that appears next would take you through completion. It would ask you for the partition size, to opt the file system (NTFS most likely), and ask you to choose the Drive Label, etc. And, you’ll get to see a rundown of your choices before formatting.
- Voila, you would be able to move the media to the new Drive.
An empty drive is to be used for best results. The more the data, the more complex the process is.
